Black History Scholarship Essay Contest


We can only move forward from our history if we learn from it and decide how we want to use that knowledge in the future. Let’s get a start on that future with the  13th Annual Black History Scholarship Essay Contest!

Local high school students from Valdosta, Lowndes, Cook, Berrien, Echols, Lanier, Madison (Fl), and Brooks , both public and private, are invited to submit an essay on this year’s topic, “Media’s Role in Race Relations.”  Judging is done by a 3rd party and winners will be announced on March 8th, and celebrated during a reception on March 15th.

This year’s topic is “Media’s Role in Race Relations.” Your essay should address the following:

Media…it shapes our world through news, advertising, movies and television. What role do you think it has played over the years in race relations? How has it helped construct or deconstruct stereotypes? Do you believe the state of media in 2019 has a negative or positive influence on today’s race relations? Why do you feel this way?

  2. Write your essay.
  3. Submit your information and essay using the “Entry Form” button below. (Or, you can turn in a paper copy at the offices of Black Crow Media at 1711 Ellis Drive, Valdosta, Ga 31601 no later than 5 pm, February 28, 2018)

**Please do not include your name on the essay itself. If you are turning in a paper copy, you will fill out an entry form at Black Crow Media.**
